Naturalists and Conservation
The Field Naturalists Club of Victoria
The FNCV was established in 1880 and has a proud record of achievement in fostering an understanding of our natural world and working for its conservation. It maintains a number of special interest groups and publishes a refereed journal, The Victorian Naturalist, and a regular newsletter.
South East Australian Naturalists Association
SEANA is an umbrella association for field naturalists clubs and similar natural history groups across Victoria and adjoining areas. It fosters two state-wide gatherings of naturalists each year, in Autumn and Spring – these are hosted by member clubs and offer the chance to explore regions across the state in the company of like-minded folk. The LVFNC is a member of SEANA and has contributed actively to its operation, having hosted camps in 1994, 2001, 2010 and, jointly with the Sale & District FNC, in 2017. Wendy Savage and Phil Rayment are past secretaries of SEANA, and Phil is currently president.
Australian Naturalists Network
The ANN links natural history clubs across the nation. It maintains a register of clubs with contact details, so that naturalists can readily make connections when visiting other parts of Australia. It also supports the holding of nation-wide Get-togethers; these have so far been held in even-numbered years from 2000 through to 2018, but are currently in abeyance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
South Gippsland Conservation Society
The SGCS was established in 1976 and works actively for conservation across South Gippsland’s coasts and country. The Bunurong Environment Centre in Inverloch is a key part of its links with the community. Quite a few folk belong to both the LVFNC and the SGCS.
